Week 7: Sustainability in the Graphic Design Industry

Sustainability in the Graphic Design Industry

What is 'cradle to cradle' design and how can you see this applied in the Graphic Design industry?

Cradle to cradle is a biomimetic approach to design. The cradle to cradle framework is about improving and being more eco friendly. This means the design are to be waste free and less harmful to the environment. This means design should be recycled and re-used without loosing quality.

In the 'Creative Gallery on Sustainable Communications '- what ad has the most impact for you and why?

(Youtube, 2014)

This ad made by Colgate was on the Creative Galler site but in order to watch it I had to outsource it to Youtube. This ad had a big impact on me as it showed me how something simple that a person does every day can have a big impact. It made me appreciate water which I normally take for granted and then provided a solution in order to prevent wasting water. To not have the tap running while brushing my teeth. Simple and I liked that.

List five things that a Graphic Designer can do in their practice to decrease their impact on the environment.

  1. In producing their designs lean towards using recyclable materials
  2. Present design Ideas on a computer presentation rather then printing it on paper
  3. Re-purpose any designs you can save
  4. Use both sides of any paper you have to use
  5. Be informed about any new tactics and materials to help your designs be more eco-friendly

Week 6: Design and Ethics

Design and Ethics

What is "free pitching" and how does it effect the industry as a whole?

Free pitching is where the client unfairly manipulates the designers with the a aim of garnering unpaid work. This is damaging the industry as people should not work for free and ideas that are put out there are being stolen by larger competitors and thus newer designers are not able to grow and develop.

Why is it important to have a code of ethics in the Graphic Design industry?

Ethics are important in order to keep everyone in the industry on the same level. This is so there can be no manipulation or theft and everyone is respected in their own right. This applies to both the client and the Graphic Designers.

What is the difference between a copyright and a trademark or patent?

Copyright is the owners original expression of ideas and is protected, but not the ideas themselves. This protects the designers work from things such as reproduction of it (photos, photocopy, filming, scanning, etc.)

A Trademark identifies the particular goods and services as distinct from those of other traders. For example this could be a logo, sound, shape or form of packaging.

A Patent protects how an invention works and functions.

What measures do you need to take as a freelance designer to protect your creative output?

Making a logo for your work would help trademark everything so people know its your work. We also need to be aware of copyright and make sure whatever we use falls under the regulations of the copyright.

Week 5: Timesheet

Timesheet

I'm still learning when it comes to Graphic Design so as a freelancer I would be classified as a beginner.

An article I found on AdNews said that 43% of freelance Graphic designers are paid for the project and 37% are pain by the hour. But as a beginner the best way to gauge how much your work is worth is to calculate it by the hour. So according to AdNews the average hourly rate for a Junior Graphic Designer is $30 AUD.

With further research I found that an article on Start Up Smart said that mid-level graphic designers charge an average rate of $40-45. This article also had the same percentages as the AdNews article when it came to what percentage charged per project or hourly. Since I would be classified as low-level or beginner Graphic Designer I should be charging a bit less than the mid-level so it that would make my average $30-35 acceptable.

Week 4: Managing Yourself and Others

Managing Yourself and Others

What attributes described in Johari Window exercise do you see as key to dealing with clients?

Happy, Cheerful, Helpful, Trustworthy, Adaptable, Calm, Confident, Dependable, Observant, Organised, Patient, Self-Asserted

What attributes are key to dealing with your colleagues?

Accepting, Caring, Cheerful, Freindly, Helpful, Happy, Dependable, Trustworthy, Organised

What attributes are key to dealing with yourself?

Accepting, Happy, Cheerful, Calm, Kind, Helpful, Trustworthy, Dependable

What attributes are key to dealing with your boss?

Calm, Adaptable, Organised, Mature, Trustworthy, Dependable

How does your version of the Johari Window differ from your friends/close contacts?

I came across as a lot more happy and friendly then I thought. They also think I'm trustworthy, warm and clever as well which is great to know that they trust me.

How does this exercise make you think about your position in the workplace (ie. do you think you would be a good co-worker or boss or are there things you think you need to work on/develop?)

According to the attributes that come across to my friends and close contacts it seems that I will work well in the workplace among my colleagues and dealing with my boss. This is because I fit the trustworthy, helpful, happy, accepting and kind attributes that I think will help in those situations.

Week 2: Personality Test

Personality Test

ISFP
Introvert(41%)  Sensing(19%)  Feeling(6%)  Perceiving(3%)
  • You have moderate preference of Introversion over Extraversion (41%)
  • You have slight preference of Sensing over Intuition (19%)
  • You have slight preference of Feeling over Thinking (6%)
  • You have marginal or no preference of Perceiving over Judging (3%)

What personality type are you? Who else (famous people) share this personality type with you?

J.K.Rowling, Bill Gates, Abraham Lincoln, Christina Aguilera, Eleanor Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Emma Watson, Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Elton John

Did the results of this test suprise you? Do you agree with your personality assessment (why/why not)?

No the test result don't surprise me though I thought I would recieve a higher percentage for feeling over thinking as I normally go with my gut instincts on things. I agree that I'm a very introverted person I don't enjoy going out and partying at all hours of the night and I don't like crowds. I also don't like change and I like to often stick with familiar habits.

How do you think your personality would fit into the workplace - (you would work better in a small studio or a large global agency, you are a manager or a team member?)

I think I would work best in a large agency were I would be a small worker and perform very similar jobs this way I would improve in certain areas and I can build experience that way. I would never be a team manager as I avoid confrontation as much as possible and prefer to have set tasks given to me. I would work well in a team as I would perform my task to the best of my abilities.

Week 1: Show and Tell

My Inspiration

Angela Clayton

Angela Clayton is an 18 year old you designs and creates her own costumes based on historical fashion.

What is special about this object and how have you incorporated elements of this into your design work/creative practice?

What makes Angela special is that she hand craft everything she makes herself no matter how difficult or time consuming and she always pushes herself to do better. She also documents her design process from start to finish on her blog. I incorporated into my design work her design process and the stages she goes through in order to finish her project how she wants it. I draw and brainstorm my ideas just like she does and then I break down my design process into stages like the stages of progress she shows on her blog.

What does this object say about your personality and personal style?

Angela Clayton shows how I like intricate and creative designs. She also shows how I enjoy the design process by looking forward to each new project she makes and following along on her design progess.
